Okay, I am sometimes a little late to the game, as is the case with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I didn't watch it when it originally aired, primarily because I had terrible television reception in those days and I didn't have anyone telling me I had to watch it. I only started to watch that show last week and now I'm completely hooked. (And if you leave a spoiler in the comments, I will be quite displeased!) So now I'm catching up. In a big way. Over the last week I've watched the first 2 seasons and the first 11 episodes of season 3. I believe... yes, this is an addiction.
Lest you think that all I did this weekend was my imitation of the American Couch Sloth, I'll have you know that I managed to 1) Clean my garage, 2) Fix the Mailbox, 3) Take the garden hose in for the winter, and 4) Replace the screen door with the winter glass.
Now for the embarrassing part. This will sound elitist, and maybe it is. Saturday night I watched the final Buffy season 2 episode at about 11:30pm. At this point, I was a little upset because of the way that season ended. K was playing warcraft and I told her I was upset because I needed more Buffy (this is a warning sign of addiction, I'm told.) She allowed that perhaps we could go pick-up the collector's set on Sunday. As an aside, I think she's just trying to pacify me so that she can be undisturbed in her addiction, warcraft. So I go to bed dreaming of the many hours of Buffy that would now be a part of my Sunday's activites.
Now, I won't bore you (more) with my Journey into the Heart of American Consumerism. Suffice to say, no store (Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble) had the box set, and so I had to accept buying Season 3 until payday comes along and I can order it from Amazon.
The point of this rambling? I like to spend, not shop. These stores are within 3 miles of my house (Target is kinda sorta across the street) If there is any possible way I can avoid these stores until after the holidays, even if it involves some sort of prayer ritual, I will do it. These stores scare the crap out of me, which explains why I've never been to Target and it's been years since I've been to Wal-Mart. On the way out of Wal-Mart I said to K: "I'm not sure what it is about these places that bother me so much, something about how they speak to us, as Americans."
K said, "What can be more American than Quality Goods at Low, Low Prices?"
She was being sarcastic. At least I got out of the house this weekend.
Oh wait, there WAS another point to this. I wish these quality shows would come out on DVD first, and TV later. When I really get into a show, I go into full-on completist mode. I devour the whole thing with the fewest possible interruptions. I know that the model of Television production isn't set up to work this way, but I'm far too impatient in most cases. Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars... I wish I could watch a whole season at once, instead of drawing it out (over HOW many months?!?) In fact, K and I typically watch BSG only once every two weeks, so that at we have a couple of episodes to watch at a time. These shows are basically better-made, better-written, better-developed movies anyhow, it's time we start demanding that they be released like movies.
Just not like George Lucas movies, know what I mean?
For the first time in recorded memory, the boss (the big man) sent everyone home early because the roads were crappy. That might not be completely accurate, I just don't recall any other time that he did that. So I've got that going for me.
It is kinda nice to be done for the day and knowing that I don't have to go anywhere this weekend. I'm down with that. Now all I have to do is decide what it is I'm going to do this weekend. Here's my list of alternatives:
- Watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 (thanks Woobie!)
- Work on NaNoWriMo
- Play World of Warcraft
- Do some serious web maintenance
- Clean-out the garage
- Fix the mailbox
- Playstation/Xbox
- Watch the Badger Game
- Watch the Packer Game
We'll see what actually happens. I'm betting on Buffy/Warcraft.
